Pre-Alpha
This is
MerCruiser top cover p/n 76098A1. It was used from 1968 to 1983. The 3/8 bolts used on this cover are 1 1/4 long. It comes with the
bearing set and shims.
This top cover
comes from MerCruiser. The outside diameter of the bearing cup and
shims is 1.937

Alpha One
This is
MerCruiser p/n 94998A4. The top of this cover is flat. It was used from 1984 to
1991 on all Alpha One drives. The 3/8 bolts used on this cover are 1 inch long. It comes with the
bearing set, shims and 4 bolts.
This cover
may also be used in place of the older Pre-Alpha top cover ( shown above ) which was used from 1968 to 1983 by
using the 4 shorter bolts included.
This top cover
is made by GLM Marine. The outside diameter of the bearing cup and shims is 1.775

MerCruiser p/n 18312A1. It is used from approx. 1992 to 1995 on all Alpha
One/Generation II drives. The 3/8 bolts used on this cover are 1 long. It comes with the
bearing set, dip stick and shims.

Alpha One/Generation II
This is
MerCruiser p/n 828692A1. It is used from approx. 1996 to Date on all Alpha
One/Generation II drives. The 3/8 bolts used on this cover are 1 long. It comes with the
bearing set and shims.
This top cover is
made by GLM Marine. It does not come with a dip stick nor does it have a hole in
the top for a dip stick.
The outside diameter of the bearing cup and shims is 1.775

Top Cover Socket

This is a 3/8 -
12 point socket which fits the 4 top cover bolts on Pre-Alpha, Alpha One, Generation
II and Bravo drives.
It has a 3/8
square drive for a ratchet or torque wrench.
Older boat ( 1965
- 1970 ) which have Phillips head bolts, can be replaced with the 3/8 - 12 point
bolts which are ideal for using a torque wrench. The torque on these bolts is 20
foot pounds.
The socket does
not come with any bolts as shown in this photo.
