Engine Exhaust Water Shutters
Water shutters
are located inside of the engine exhaust system pipes, just before the exhaust
gas passes thru the transom. Without these shutters, lake water can be sucked
backwards into the engine when the engine is hot and is being shut down. Many
times, when the outdrive is removed or the drive is separated for a water pump
replacement, you will find a pieces of these laying around. They should be
replaced to protect the engine.
Some shutters fit
down below in the pipe, just before the gases are leaving the boat. The engine
usually has to be remove to replace these shutters.
Other shutters
are located up above, where the exhaust gas just leaves the engine. These can be
replaced by removing the cast iron exhaust elbow or sometimes sliding down the
1st rubber bellows.
This is
MerCruiser p/n 60930. It is used on many applications.
This has a 1/8 by
1/4 metal bar molded into the rubber which is 3 inches long.
Some applications
use a grommet at each end of this shutter to hold it in place and some use the
a plastic retainer ring. ( both are shown below )

applications. The OD of this retainer is exactly 3"

25-35029 o-ring. It is used along with the above # 0931 retainer. It seals the
bottom of the pipe coming down from the exhaust manifold. V-8 engines require
(2) of these.
The ID of this
o-ring is 3 1/8 and is 1/8 thick.

This WAS
MerCruiser p/n 14348A1 & 14348A2 water shutter. It was used on many V-6 & V-8
applications.
This shutter had
a stainless steel plate molded into the rubber. It was 4 1/2 inches long by 2 1/2
inches wide. It is held in place with a 1/8 inch round metal rod which is 3 1/2
inches long and 2 grommets which were included.
The number 14348
is stamped into the stainless steel plate.

This is
MerCruiser p/n 807166A3 water shutter.
This does not use
any pins or grommets to hold it in place because it has 2 tabs molded into the
sides which snap into the holes which the above grommets used. These shutters
are made to fit an opening of 2 1/2 by 3 3/4. They are 6 inches long straight
out flat.
This shutter

This shutter is 6

inch metal bar molded to it which is 3 inches long and has 2 grommets which are
included.
