These components go in the lower half of the outdrive. They are for shifting the clutch dog into forward and reverse gears on # 1 MerCruiser drives made from approximately 1968 to Date.

            9 1/4" Lower Shift Shaft

This steel lower shift shaft is 9 1/4 inches long and was used from 1968 to 1977. As you can see, the area where the seal fits has been all rusted away. A new seal will never keep water from entering into the outdrive oil.

To quickly see if you have a steel shaft,  see if a magnet sticks to it. If it does, replace it with the newer stainless steel shaft ( below ). It will never rust.

This is the replacement for the old steel shaft. It is MerCruiser p/n 77481-1
( old # 37973 & 65028 ). This shaft is 9 1/4 inches long and will fit # 1 drives made from 1968 to 1990.

Drives made after 1978 have these newer stainless steel shafts and do not need to be replaced.

This shaft will not fit Generation II drives.

 Alpha One/Generation II
Lower Shift Shaft Bushing

This is the lower shift shaft bushing assembly. It is MerCruiser p/n
23- 815921A21. It fits into the lower housing on all # 1 drives made from 1991 - Date.

It seals the shift shaft and the speedometer pickup. It comes with the lower o-rings and oil seal installed.

This comes with a newer style, quick disconnect for the speedometer hose.

When replacing this assembly only, the lower outdrive housing should be clamped in a vise to prevent disturbing the shift shaft gear crank in the lower housing when the shift shaft is pulled straight up to remove it. When the shift shaft is out of the lower housing, it is possible to move the gear crank in the lower housing making it impossible to replace the shift shaft without disassembling the entire lower outdrive.

Please note the position of the bend on the top of the shift shaft so it can be reinstalled in exactly the same position.
