   Square to Spline
 Upper Swivel Shaft

This is MerCruiser # 88302A2. It has a square on the bottom for the gimbal ring and a spline on the top for a splined steering lever. This shaft is used with replacement gimbal rings on Pre-Alpha drives with gimbal housings ending with ser # 6,225,577 
( Approximately 1976 - 1983 ). It will not fit Alpha One, Generation II or Bravo drives.

Please note ! These 2 shafts are not interchangeable because the lower bearings have different inside & outside diameters.

Above shaft lower needle bearing is 1.000 inside & 1.250 outside diameter.
Lower shaft lower S.S. bushing is 1.125 inside & 1.284 outside diameter.

 

   Square to Square
 Upper Swivel Shaft

This is MerCruiser # 98230A1. It has a square on the bottom for the gimbal ring and a square on top for a  square steering lever ( pictured below ). This shaft is used on Alpha One gimbal housing beginning with ser # 6,225,577. It will also fit all Bravo & Generation II drives.

Note "A" - MerCruiser no longer drills the 1/4 diameter grease hole down thru the center of this shaft.

This is MerCruiser # 866322A01 
( Old # 98262A1).  It is the square to square steering lever which fits inside of the gimbal housing. If the cross pincher bolt becomes loose it will wear the square inside of the lever making it impossible to tighten it enough to take the slop out.

This is MerCruiser # 11- 826713-23 upper swivel shaft lock nut ( old # 11- 25599 ). It is threaded onto the top of the upper swivel shaft and is used to pull up on the gimbal ring to obtain the .005 to .010 clearance required on the lower ear of the gimbal housing.

We grind 6 notches in the corners of the lock nut so you can use a screwdriver to install the new nut.

It is recommended running the new nut down onto the upper swivel shaft to cut threads into the nylon before installation.

This is MerCruiser # 26-41607 upper swivel shaft seal.  Each square to square upper swivel shaft takes (2) of these seals. (1) is pressed above the stainless steel bushings shown below and (1) is pressed below the bushing. They keep the lake water from entering the boat. This seal is for the square to square upper swivel shaft only.

This is MerCruiser # 23-98357 stainless steel upper swivel shaft bushing.  It is the larger of 2 bushings pressed into the upper gimbal housing for the square to square upper swivel shaft.

This is MerCruiser tool p/n 91-43578. It is used to install (2) stainless steel bushings and the thin seal into the top of the gimbal housing on Alpha One drives serial # 6,200,000 & up, all Generation II drives and all Bravo drives.

The bottom of this tool is used to install the (2) bushings into the sides of Bravo gimbal rings. ( Alpha & Gen II do not have side bushings ).

This tool will not fit Pre-Alpha and Alpha gimbal housings below serial # 6,200,000. These units have needle bearings which are a different diameter.

This is MerCruiser # 23-99352 nylon bearing. It is pressed into the bottom of the gimbal ring. Early models had a set of needle bearings with a grease fitting. This bearing requires no grease and will not fit gimbal rings which have needle bearings with grease fittings. This bearing will not fit TR , TRS or Bravo Magnum gimbal rings.

This is a driver for the above nylon bushing. It will not fit gimbal rings which have needle bearings and grease fittings because the outside diameters are different.

This is MerCruiser # 91- 86191A1 hole saw. It is used to drill (2) access holes at the top of the gimbal housing for removing the gimbal ring. This hole saw is 1 1/8 inch diameter and requires a 1/4 pilot hole to be drilled to pilot this saw.

This is a 1" 11 1/2 pitch national pipe tap.  It is used to thread the (2) access holes which get drilled at the top of the gimbal housing for removing the gimbal ring. This tap is actually larger than 1 inch and requires a 1 1/8 hole to be drilled.

This is MerCruiser # 22-88847. It is used to plug the (2) access holes which get drilled at the top of the gimbal housing for removing the gimbal ring. These are sold in a package of (1) each.

This 5/8 hex tool is used to remove/install the above 1" plastic hole plugs. Install one end of this tool into the plug and use a 5/8 socket on the other end.

Upper Swivel Pin Pullers

These tools are used with a 5/8- 18 threaded rod ( not included ) or at the end of your slide hammer with the same size thread. They are for removing the upper swivel pins.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This one is Quicksilver p/n 91-38919. It has a 1/4 pipe thread on the end and is use on upper swivel pins which have a spline in the top of the gimbal ring. These older splined swivel shafts also are split in half at the bottom and have a pipe plug with an Allen screw used to expand the split splined shaft. This tool may not completely fit the threads without removing the Allen screw.

Don't forget to remove (2) cross bolts to allow this upper swivel shaft  to come out.

A 5/8-18 slide hammer or threaded rod is required to pull on 
( not included ).

This one is Quicksilver p/n 91-63616T. It has a 7/16-14 thread on the end and is use on upper swivel pins which have a square in the top of the gimbal ring.
